I thought this sounded like an interesting book, but when I got the book and saw the "Fox New Books" label I almost didn't read it。 But, I figured I would give it a try。 Shannon Bream is a Fox News anchor and chief legal correspondent, but nowhere does she give any theological or Biblical background。 Not that you have to be a Bible scholar to write a book, but there didn't seem to be any deep theological work or research here。 If you grew up in church you likely know all the stories in this book I thought this sounded like an interesting book, but when I got the book and saw the "Fox New Books" label I almost didn't read it。 But, I figured I would give it a try。 Shannon Bream is a Fox News anchor and chief legal correspondent, but nowhere does she give any theological or Biblical background。 Not that you have to be a Bible scholar to write a book, but there didn't seem to be any deep theological work or research here。 If you grew up in church you likely know all the stories in this book and in my opinion there wasn't much else given other than pairing up women from the Bible with similar stories/situations。 Christianity has sadly often used the Bible to subjugate women, so this could be a good resource for a new Believer to show just how valued women are by God and how Jesus really challenged the patriarchal norm of His day in how He treated women。 But, for me there was no new information or insight with this book。I did like a couple quotes though:"Again and again, the Bible presents us with the struggle over infertility。。。For women of the Bible, fertility meant more than just the love of a child。 It meant more than just a way for a woman to gain security and status in the world。 Fertility was often viewed as divine favor itself。 Some believed that to bear a child was to wear a mark of God's love, and to be barren was therefore a mark of God's displeasure。 But it's important to note that from the moment God creates Eve, she is a person of value because she is created in His very image。 In our Heavenly Father's eyes, we as women are treasured and honored wholly and apart from the gift of motherhood。" (p。 17)"To us, Mary's studying at Jesus's feet might seem a natural and even touching picture。 But to a first-century Jew, this would have been a deeply shocking image。 Mary was doing three unconventional things: she was engaging in formal biblical learning; she was in close and intimate physical proximity to a rabbi; and she was seated in a group of men。 All these were taboo in her culture。 By welcoming her to sit there, Jesus was violating every cultural norm that governed how women should behave, especially in their relationship to learning and to men。" (p。 155) 。。。more

Shannon Bream presents a careful, refreshing study of sixteen women of the Bible。 As a lawyer and new journalist, she asks provoking questions which drew me to reread the passages, compare and contrast, and rethink how and why they are included in God’s Word。

ExcellentEnjoyed so much of this book。 It truly made me look deeper into everything。 Being more open, understanding and accepting of women and what they’ve gone through。

I enjoyed how Shannon Bream compared and contrasted two women in each chapter。 This is a unique approach and thought provoking。 I appreciate that she discussed the cultural limitations for women at the time as well as how women today can relate and learn from their strength。 I loved how she showed these women and their connection to Christ。

Book of wisdomPriceless inspiration and wisdom。 Shannon Bream is a gifted author, we need more of her kind of women in this world。 She is definitely a Proverb 31 woman, may God continue to bless her with his wisdom, in Jesus’ precious name。

Beautifully written。 I learned so much more about the women of the Bible and their stories。 Wonderful book。

This is not a scholarly review of the 16 women of the Bible, but is an easy read and, for me, a faith-strengthening one。

Alyssa

This was heavy on summaries of Bible stories。 I would have appreciated more analysis and discussion。

Shannon Bream takes us through the stories of 16 women in the Bible to establish their equality, value and purpose in God’s kingdom。 These short chapters affirm women in this life, reminding us that throughout history, God has valued women as part of His plan for salvation。 There’s nothing real deep about these lessons, but it was a sweet and inspiring summer devotional。

Interesting and easy to read。。。。some information I did not realize/know。 Would be better as a book study than reading as an individual。

"The Women of the Bible Speak" by Shannon Bream is an awe inspiring book。 I truly recommend every women read this book。 (Men to0; if they're interested)。 Through scripture interpretation Shannon it takes us to first remember the stories of women in the Bible。 I am very interested in reading her first book "Finding the Bright Side"。 "The Women of the Bible Speak" by Shannon Bream is an awe inspiring book。 I truly recommend every women read this book。 (Men to0; if they're interested)。 Through scripture interpretation Shannon it takes us to first remember the stories of women in the Bible。 I am very interested in reading her first book "Finding the Bright Side"。 。。。more

Such a wonderful way to study the women of the Bible。 The stories are broken into groupings and explained in a way that is different than typical teachings。 I loved, but didn’t expect the study guide。 Enjoyed the book so much (I had borrowed it from the library) that I ordered my own copy to take notes!

A sensitively and intelligently written devotional, and a proclamation that the God who sees us does not see women as footnotes, but instrumental in His plan。

I wished this book had more research behind it。 There wasn’t as much “new” or “enlightening” information as I was hoping for。 It felt a lot like a review of scripture I already knew。 She did have some interesting study questions。 It would have been interesting to hear her answers to some of those questions。

Short episodes for each woman discussed。。。

Beautiful story…。back in the days of Jesus, women were valued based on their ability to bear children, were outcast and thought to be out of favor with God if they were barren。 This book explains how Jesus valved all women and tells the stories of these women who Jesus favored due to their loyalty, faith, and courage。 A truly inspiring read。

Wonderful look into the women we’ve read about the Bible for years!

A friend lent me this book, saying that I'd really enjoy it。 I approached it with skepticism。 Not only was the "Fox News Books" imprint a warning, so also were the author's credentials -- more precisely, the absence of credentials。 (Covering the Supreme Court for Fox News does not qualify her as a Biblical commentator, despite years of Sunday school attendance。) True, the stories were interesting。 It had been a long time since I read the stories of Old Testament heroines。 However, other than quo A friend lent me this book, saying that I'd really enjoy it。 I approached it with skepticism。 Not only was the "Fox News Books" imprint a warning, so also were the author's credentials -- more precisely, the absence of credentials。 (Covering the Supreme Court for Fox News does not qualify her as a Biblical commentator, despite years of Sunday school attendance。) True, the stories were interesting。 It had been a long time since I read the stories of Old Testament heroines。 However, other than quotations from the Bible there is no evidence that the author consulted any scholarly works (and there are plenty) to provide context and to amplify her opinions。 Furthermore, all the Bible quotations are given with no reference to the translation。 That translation is copyrighted; apparently violating copyright didn't matter to Bream or her editors。P。S。 Two red flags: Bream states that Moses wrote Genesis。 Tradition may say that but scholarship does not。 Also, p。48 states that "the greatest member of the national of Israel ever to be born, Christ our savior, was the child of the lesser-loved wife。" What?? 。。。more

Disappointing! Product of Fox News Press and the author is a Fox New "anchor" of a news program at night。 The author may make money, but loses credibility。 Disappointing! This book is not a mere retelling of stories from the Bible。 The author goes into great depth on these women’s experiences and the impact on their lives and the lives of others。 In some cases, they were seeking God in the midst of desperate situations。 In other circumstances, God sought them out and unexpectedly intervened in their lives。 The book paints the picture of an involved, loving and compassionate God。 He notices people that many humans ignore。 He sees what others do not see。 He answers This book is not a mere retelling of stories from the Bible。 The author goes into great depth on these women’s experiences and the impact on their lives and the lives of others。 In some cases, they were seeking God in the midst of desperate situations。 In other circumstances, God sought them out and unexpectedly intervened in their lives。 The book paints the picture of an involved, loving and compassionate God。 He notices people that many humans ignore。 He sees what others do not see。 He answers prayers, sometimes on a very large scale。 When Jesus walked the earth, He treated others the same way, healing people who had not even asked to be healed, raising the dead due to pure compassion。 We may not be wealthy, famous, prominent or powerful, but God sees our struggles and He cares。The women the book discusses range from famous to obscure。 Some of them had great impact on the history of Israel and salvation history, such as both Ruth and the former prostitute, Rahab becoming ancestors of Jesus, and Esther helping save the Jews in the Persian Empire from extinction。 God rewards faithfulness and He is faithful to those who believe in Him。Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the book is Ms Bream’s comparison of seemingly unrelated characters such as Mary the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, or Esther and Rahab。 The author gives additional background on stories that seem to be mere footnotes in scripture, such as Tamar, daughter in law of Judah, the father of the Jews。 Tamar was also an ancestor of Jesus。 I greatly appreciate Ms Bream’s book。 I learned a lot, especially about God。 。。。more

InterestingThis was an interesting idea, but I am not sure that the execution was there。 I do like how she compared the women, but I would have chosen others。

This book was well written and the reader will like the questions after each chapter, the questions make you think and go deep into what was written about them。 The reader should should have their Bible handy to read the passages about each woman。 Kudos to Shannon Bream, you really brought these women's attributes out! This was a fabulous book。 I learned so much about the women of the Bible and the author put it in a practical perspective。 Yes this says it’s a Fox News book but it is not a political book by any stretch of the imagination。 Highly recommend!
